This is a very useful diagnostic measure to aid in the work up of liver, kidney and splenic disease as well as heart diseases, but there are other indications for ultrasounds as well. Abdominal, heart and chest ultrasounds require for your pet to be dropped off at the clinic in the morning and collected in the afternoon. Pregnancy ultrasounds are usually done within a half hour consultation and you will be able to stay present with your pet throughout.

Your pet will usually have the examination area shaved, as it is necessary to have the ultrasound probe directly touching the skin. Most ultrasounds can be done without anaesthesia or even sedation, as ultrasounds are a painless procedure, done in a darkened room, which is quite calming for most animals. For abdominal, heart and chest ultrasounds we typically recommend for your pet to be sedated since they take longer to perform, so having your pet still still without sedation for that duration can cause unnecessary stress.
