Leptospirosis
You may have heard some discussion in the media recently surrounding an outbreak of the disease Leptospirosis in Inner Sydney.
Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease which is transmitted to dogs and other animals from water or soil that has been contaminated with infected rat urine. It causes a serious and often lethal disease in dogs and other animals including humans. It can even affect animals that have been vaccinated against the disease
Fortunately for Canberra Pet owners, we currently have no reported cases of this disease. Luckily the recent outbreak has been confined to a few suburbs in Inner Sydney. Whilst there is a vaccination to prevent leptospirosis, it is only recommended for dogs living in the high risk suburbs of Inner Sydney.
If you have any questions about this disease please don’t hesitate to contact us here at Inner South Veterinary Centre.
