Bird care starts with diet and husbandry and extends to surgery, laboratory testing and X-rays. The team has extensive experience in all sized birds from small parrots like budgies, cockatiels and lovebirds, as well as the larger parrots like ringnecks, eclectus, amazon parrots, cockatoos, galahs, african grey parrots and macaws. We also have a wealth of experience in treating backyard poultry such as chickens, ducks and geese. If you have a bird that needs veterinary attention we are very happy to look after you.
Birds as pets – Birds are popular pets and they come in all different shapes, sizes, personalities and prices. With a bit of research you can work out which type of bird would be suitable for your lifestyle, your accommodation and your budget. Staff at the Inner South Veterinary Centre are always happy to provide information about these pets.
The main types of birds kept as pets are parrots, both native and exotic species. There are 350+ species world wide and 50 species native to Australia. Canaries and finches are also popular, and there are many much loved backyard chickens as well. Peacocks, quail, ducks and geese are also kept as pets.
“The single most important thing you can do for your bird is to feed it right!”
Many pet and aviary birds are not fed a balanced and varied diet. They suffer from obesity and dietary deficiencies, thus reducing their quality of life and overall life expectancy. This is such a loss, when your feathered mate does not make it as long as you expected they would!
